Good choice. Its a better all-round card. Nvidia's GPU technology is used with a variety of video post production software from all of the Adobe CS products to AVID Media Composer to Davinci Resolve. In my experience, the hot game cards (like your 680) work very well.

I recently went to switch my capture setup to 1080p25, I had not really checked it out recently, I was pretty surprised to see no option for grabbing at this rate, I was coding with qtkit and quicktime grabbers. I did see some progressive settings but only for 23.976 and 24 framerates. After a little tinkering I tried it with avfoundation and sure enough I get access to all the supported rates of the card.

There is a thread on the forum here about this but it is not resolved with a firmware update and it is nothing to do with blackmagic per se it is just a problem with software using outdated capture libraries. http://troikatronix.com/troikatronixforum/discussion/comment/5268#Comment_5268 I had a further tinker and found that although I could get the input with avfoundation, using the blackmagic SDK directly gave me total control over the input preset (if you have a card with multiple types of hardware input you can also set that from the SDK which is pretty handy). The blackmagic SDK also gives me much much less latency around a frame I think to get the image on my laptop screen in 1080p as well as what I think is better quality colour space conversion. Those of you looking to get the 1080p functions working in Isadora will not be able to unless you use the SDK (someone can make an Isadora plugin for it) or if Isadora changes to a more up to date capture library. I believe gstreamer is looking like a good cross platform option for other coders.

I am often trying to record the outputs from performance software for production and have tested many options. I have found that MatthewH's method of using your graphics card out works very well. The BMD HDMI to SDI converted is a good option. I use the HDMI IN on a BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle. It works well as long as your graphics card will support 29.97, 23.976, or 59.94 fps (Hz) output. - Justin

No rs232 but a very simple Arduino sketch will do, take the ethernet model and you can have it with OSC.

The only way to get 4 outputs from a MacBook Air is with a Datapath x4 or equivalent. That's a very expensive solution though.

I think you can go with the PC, with these caveats: 1) Performance is much better with WMV/AVI movies than with Quicktime Movies. These movies are however limited by these factors: They can't play backwards Scrubbbing them (using the position input) is very glitchy These are limitations of the Windows OS "DirectShow" system. If you're just doing standard playback, these factors aren't an issue. But I wanted to mention it. Regarding the CI actors, FreeFrameGL support is coming very soon, along with a host of new features. That will give you the performance of the CI actors on Windows. So, with that in mind, I would say you can work on a PC. Best Wishes, Mark

Okay, so the new Kinect looks amazing, but it's got a proprietary connection that even the support guy I talked to doesn't know what is, after he investigated further. It comes with a 3 meter cable but no option to extend it. The kinect also can't be bought separately. So it renders it pretty useless for any theatrical work, as there's no way for the kinect to be controlled from the booth, or even connect to a computer in the first place... maybe there'll be some workarounds in the future, but in the meantime...

A little update. I contacted the CL folks and it would appear that their platform driver will only support a single camera, even if you have purchased the multi-cam licence. The licence enables multi-cam use with their api.

"You would have to code an application with our API which either directly communicates the video data to the app or uses something like directshow pipeline which may already be supported in the app." Has anyone tackled this at all or would anyone have any input on how I might be able to tackle this? There have been commercial products(made in china) that do very good motion tracking combining IR lights, motion sensors and a camera and a computer. You have most likely seen a pond projected on the floor where you can scare swimming fish by walking through it and reveal an advertisement.

This could be really fun to use with isadora... not sure how but I am sure there would be a way.

No problem, Mark!  I've actually found a good answer, with hints from @vanakaru. I've been meaning to post here, but am still wrapped up in the creation of the show.

Basically, I bought a Matrox MXO2 Mini with ExpressCard to plug into my laptop and it works very well! If I want to also use it on my desktop production machine, all I have to do is buy the Matrox PCI card and then I have a solution that ports between any machine.  It also works PC to MAC, so it's very flexible!

Matrox support is fantastic, by the way.  Quite expert and they don't keep you on hold forever.

Well it depends on the range you need and how many other wifi networks you can see when you are in the theatre. You get a lot more headroom with 5.ghz as far as throughput goes, but less range, of you don't need the range then you can use 5ghz, but this wont help much if you camera is not 5ghz capable. What model camera are you using? Is it a 2.4ghz wifi camera (IP) or 2.4ghz rf? If you get the right person to ask the audience to turn them off then it works (I found waiting for everyone to sit down and then make an announcement including something like "we are using sensitive equipment and leaving your phones on will ruin the show"

If you want to send live camera direct to a projector use a video mixer, you can use a matrix as well so you can still have the input in Isadora, otherwise you will get a big delay. Most video mixers can do a PIP composite also.

You can get delay at every point of your system, many non pro cameras have a delay before they even output the image, your capture card will have a delay and your compositing will add a delay and your projector will also add a delay. Without a ton of pro gear you will get a delay, big pro projectors also have a big delay. If you are in a big space you can delay the audio to match (if it is not too much- ie just compensating for a projector, not a whole chain of delays). I have dealt with this problem many times and a video mixer is the way (There are things you can do to minimise the delay if you have to go through a computer, but Isadora does not give you so many options, mostly getting the fastest possible hardware and then programming your video effects in something super fast like pure opengl or openCL).
