markM Images and Reflections on Media Design for "Shatterproof" from Mark

Some final pictures and reflections from our research project "Shatterproof", conceived and directed by Sten Rudstrom, and performed by Ingo Rülecke and Ulrike Brand. I was so fortunate to work with such talented, generous and creative souls for this work.

The piece itself is concerned with how we regard the human form when it is pitted against video imagery. I used Isadora to capture live feeds from iPhones which the performers could place on their bodies or in various locations within the space. Then I performed a "live mix" of those images on as many as 8 displays. The mandate I received from Sten (the director) was to oscillate between two polarities: one where I attempt to tear the viewer's eyes away from the compelling improvisations of the performers, and another where I relax that tension by removing imagery from the displays or showing a single image on one of the smaller monitors. The goal in all of this was to raise the viewer's awareness of their own feelings as they are pushed and pulled them towards (or away from) the imagery and the performers.

It was such a great process for me. The piece is totally improvised – there is no script whatsoever for this work. This means the images I am able to capture are never the same. Because of this, I simply had no choice but to be utterly present to the material and relationships offered to me by the performers. I really felt ***SO**** alive with them as each rehearsal or performance progressed.

Thanks again to Sten, Ulrike and Ingo for such an enlivening process.

Technically, in Isadora, I created a very flexible 13 by 8 matrix router: I could choose any of 10 movies or three lives feeds (Three NDI Watchers receiving live video from the iPhones) as sources, and route these to any of the 8 displays in the room. For the displays that were doubled-up, I could choose to send an individual image to each display, or to send a single image to both, so that the two deploys formed as a single image. (See the face of the 'cello player in the first picture for an example.)

The patch ran on my MacBook Pro M1 Max, which offers up to three video outputs. It worked beautifully. It never showed a LOAD of more than 10% even while playing 10 movies as the same time and receiving three NDI feeds from the iPhones.

I originally tried two Triple Head 2 Go's to reach feed the eight diplsay, but failed to get them to work together. (They apparently had a differing tables of output resolutions/frequences, so they the Matrox software said they could not be used on the same computer.) In the end, I was able to get eight outputs as follows:

    1. Data Path FX 4 (four)
    2. Triple Head 2 Go (three)
    3. Built-in HDMI output. (one)

So, aside from three days of mayhem at the beginning getting things to work, once I had this setup, everything worked beautifully for the remainder of the rehearsal period.

Pro Tip #1: If you ever try to use Blackmagic HMDI <-> SDI converters, you'll run into some issues if the resolution and frequencies aren't to their liking. From what other users have told me, using CAT 5 extenders for the HDMI is a much better bet.

Pro Tip #2: Make sure to turn off the HDCP copy protection in the Data Path FX 4. If you see solid red images at the output, it is turned on!

GertjanBG Projector placement for big scrim projections

    Hi all,

I'm breaking my head over the placement of the projector for a big scrim projection (10m wide 5 or 6m high). On a tight budget.

I don't want any "left over projection going trough the screen" to fall on the back wall that is 5m behind the scrim.

If I calculate this I have to put the projector high up and very steep down so I lose a lot of the projection area. (I won't be having this hight every time and we don't have a budget to have enough ansi lumens I think)

An other option is to put it closer but then I have a big trapezoid. (0.8 lens in example)

When I try with two projectors I see the same problems. (a bit less)

    What am I missing?

    G Background Substraction

Hi Forum - further to the info in Guru Session no17. and the WerkStatt 2016 IR tracking video, can anybody kindly advise if there is any hard and fast rule about 'when' to make the screen grab on the Freeze actor? For example, if a theatre show has 30 different lighting states that vary in intensity from each lighting state - is it therefore necessary (or advisable) to screen grab for each new lighting state or simply make one grab at the beginning of the show for all the different lighting states? Does that make sense?

E [ANSWERED] Receiving photos during performance

    Hi there:)
I am experimenting with how e.g. a heat map, that is created from another computer can manipulate something else during an installation.
So my question for anyone knowing about sending something to Isadora could tell me, if and how it is possible to send photo to Isadora, and then incorporate it in a patch?
What I mean is: There is a computer creating heatmaps over time. I want to take in this heat map, and e.g. use this to change the color of the lighting in the space. So my question is, how do I take in photos during an installation and get isadora to registrate this new photo in an actor?
Is this an option? Or do anyone have other Ideas?
Many thanks for any help or ideas:) Eva

PS: the light part is up and running:)

    E Hot Hand Midi Controller?

    Hi,

I fell over this little thing, that seems easy to get used and not so expensive.

    https://www.sourceaudio.net/ho...

Did anyone use it with Isadora? I imagine it could be a very cool feature to use to access the dancefloor during a concert while controlling the visual surface:)

But I dont know if the setup allows that?

I will love to hear experiences:)

    Cheers

J [ANSWERED] How to create a video feedback effect?

    Hi there,

Looking for some general input on creating a video feedback effect for a music video. Shooting an electronic music video next week and experimenting with a few different projections for behind the band. I've looked at using the live capture for video and sound, and mixing them together with various actors like the dots actor to get a similar effect. But because my knowledge of actors is limited, I wanted to see if anyone here has some suggestions.

We're not married to the idea of the live capture video and sound, it's just generally the closest to aesthetic and vibe we've gotten. Here's a reference for the type of look we are hoping to achieve:

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks all!

    grimvisionsG [SOLVED] 25FPS limit

    Hello everyone!

Working on some simple playback with Isadora 3.2.6 and my frame rate seems to be stuck at 25FPS. I've fielded with system preferences but can't seem to get a smoother play back. Cycles are currently hitting 500. Not sure why it seems stuck at this limit!

If anyone can offer some advice I'd appreciate it.

    Specs - Monterey MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) Apple M1 Max 32 GB

    Cheers
